SMITHSONIAN CHANNEL™ PROBES AN EXPLOSIVE NEW THEORY THAT REWRITES STORY OF NORTH AMERICA’S FIRST HUMANS IN

ICE BRIDGE: THE IMPOSSIBLE JOURNEY

NEW ONE-HOUR SPECIAL PREMIERES WEDNESDAY, APRIL18 AT 8PM ET/PT

NEW YORK – APRIL 4, 2018 – An astonishing discovery found jutting from an eroding coastal cliff on an island in the Chesapeake Bay in 2012 is challenging scientists’ long-held theory about the first humans to inhabit North America – where they originated, and how and when they arrived. It points to an explosive theory: Ice Age people made an epic journey across a massive ice bridge spanning a frozen Atlantic about six thousand years before people trekked across what is now the Bering Strait. The extraordinary find could rewrite history and upend our understanding of early human migration. Using archaeology, geology and genetics, a new one-hour documentary follows the expedition and search to uncover new evidence that could unravel the 20,000-year-old mystery. The film uses re-creation and state-of-the-art CGI to bring to life the ancient frozen wilderness and the fearsome Ice Age beasts that once ruled our continent. ICE BRIDGE: THE IMPOSSIBLE JOURNEY premieres Wednesday, April 18 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Smithsonian Channel.

It is widely believed that the first migrants to North America arrived approximately 14,000 years ago, having walked across a land bridge from Siberia to Alaska in the West. In ICE BRIDGE: THE IMPOSSIBLE JOURNEY, new evidence supports an extraordinary theory of another trip to the New World: a trans-Atlantic crossing six thousand years earlier by travelers from mainland Europe to the eastern coast of North America. Renowned archaeologists Dennis Stanford, from Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, and Bruce Bradley, from University of Exeter, gain special access to a private island off the east coast of Maryland, where a treasure trove of stone artifacts—bifaces, blades and projectiles believed to be 20,000 years old—has been discovered. In a race against time, they lead a team of international scientists on an urgent mission to excavate the crumbling 20-foot cliff before the site vanishes – washed away by the rising tides. The new discoveries could change everything known about the earliest human inhabitants of our continent and how they arrived here.

Who were these people? The artifacts found at the site indicate an ancient culture capable of making sophisticated tools, and the film follows the researchers as they go in search of evidence of innovative, skillful hunters able to manufacture such weapons. Bradley travels to Europe to examine an 80,000-year-old cave in the Pyrenees, which may support the connection between a group of Ice Age hunters and the sea. These hunters were called the Solutreans, and, as Stanford and Bradley discover, the tools they made are nearly identical to the ones found in the Chesapeake. Could these Western Europeans have crossed the frigid Atlantic Ocean thousands of years before Columbus and the Vikings?

Despite challenges from the scientific community, both Stanford and Bradley are staking their reputations on the theory. It will take irrefutable evidence to persuade the skeptics, but in the meantime, the scientists continue to search at the dig site, believing that one day the final proof will come for one of humanity’s monumental achievements and greatest journeys.

As Stanford and Bradley search for evidence, ICE BRIDGE: THE IMPOSSIBLE JOURNEY also pursues a genetic detective story. Geneticist Stephen Oppenheimer and his team at Huddersfield University spend months tracing unique mitochondrial DNA found in many North Americans back to the Solutrean region. The team gains rare permission to work with a singular Native American tribe, the Huron-Wendat, and is granted an unprecedented exception to sequence the sacred remains of 40 pre-Columbian ancestors for a genetic study. Oppenheimer’s group achieves some exciting results while searching for a genetic marker prevalent in Europe 20,000 years ago as a way to establish clear evidence that people possessing the isolated gene came to North America from across the Atlantic.

SCIENCE CHANNEL’S ‘DEADLY INTELLIGENCE’ INVESTIGATES UNTIMELY AND UNUSUAL DEATHS OF BRILLIANT SCIENTISTS

All-new series premieres Sunday, April 8 at 10 pm ET/PT

(New York) – A new Science Channel series explores the suspicious deaths of scientific geniuses to determine if their demises were unfortunate coincidences or if these gifted minds were murdered for knowing too much. DEADLY INTELLIGENCE premieres Sunday, April 8 at 10pm ET/PT on Science Channel. What some experts have deemed cold or closed cases, others see as ongoing conspiracies based on bizarre circumstances, significant holes in investigations, and possible motives for murder.

In each of the eight, hour-long episodes, experts unravel the mysterious deaths of cutting-edge scientists, each caught in a web of intrigue before their lives were cut short. DEADLY INTELLIGENCE takes a closer look at the circumstances surrounding some of these fatalities to understand if ingenious research and discoveries cost brilliant scientists their lives.

The premiere episode looks to uncover the death of Frank Olson, a CIA employed biological warfare scientist, who died after falling out of the window of a New York City hotel in 1953. The official story is that he jumped, but his family believes he was murdered. One of the theories explored is that Olson, who witnessed brutal interrogations using biological agents he helped develop, may have developed misgivings about his work, leading the CIA to eliminate one of their own.

“It’s said that knowledge is power, but in these compelling stories, knowledge is also tightly intertwined with mystery, conspiracy and perhaps even murder,” said Caroline Perez, Vice President of Development and Production, Science Channel. “Innovative scientists have always run the risk of creating or discovering something so dangerous – or valuable – that others would kill for it.”

Other mysteries explored this season include Nikola Tesla, the father of the ‘Death Ray’ who was found dead in a New York hotel room at the height of WWII; engineer Gerald Bull, who was gunned down outside of his Brussels apartment after his research in cutting-edge artillery made him a target among powerful associates; Jack Parsons, the Jet Propulsion Lab co-founder who had powerful enemies and has been suspected of espionage, and was killed in a suspicious lab explosion which may have been than a chemical mishap; American researcher Shane Todd who supposedly committed suicide in Singapore in 2012, but the work he was doing on a futuristic semi-conductor may have been what cost him his life; and more.

DEADLY INTELLIGENCE is produced for Science Channel by Beyond Productions. For Beyond Productions, Martyn Ives is executive producer and Nick Long is series producer. For Science Channel, Lindsey Foster Blumberg is supervising producer.

“MARCH FOR OUR LIVES” RALLY IN WASHINGTON, D.C. SAID TO BE LARGEST EVER IN CAPITAL’S HISTORY

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 24, 2018 – Exceeding expectations, a huge throng of peaceful but passionate demonstrators filled the streets around the U.S. Capitol for today’s March For Our Lives in Washington, D.C. Addressed by teenage speakers from around the country who have been affected by gun violence, attendees rallied to demand legislative action.
While Washington, D.C. authorities have yet to give an official estimate, reports published by major news organizations put the crowd size at 800,000 people, which would make it the largest demonstration in the capital’s history. Among the day’s highlights:
· Andra Day and Common kicked off the rally with a performance of “Rise Up” backed by students from Baltimore’s Cardinal Shehan School Choir. Other performances throughout the day included Demi Lovato singing “Skyscraper,” Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ben Platt performing “Found/Tonight,” Vic Mensa performing “We Could Be Free,” Miley Cyrus performing “The Climb” as she held onto a “Never Again” sign, and Ariana Grande singing “Be Alright.”

· Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School junior Jaclyn Corin brought onstage Yolanda Renee King, the 9-year old granddaughter of Martin Luther King, Jr., who shouted to the assembled marchers, “I have a dream that enough is enough,” and then got the crowd to chant, “Spread the word. Have you heard? All across the nation, we are going to be a great generation.”

· Parkland survivor Sam Fuentes read a poem she wrote called “Enough,” and then led the crowd in a chorus of “Happy Birthday” for Parkland victim Nick Dworet, who would have turned 18 today.

· Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School senior Emma Gonzalez sat onstage in silence for 6 minutes and 20 seconds, the time it took for the Parkland shooter to kill 17 people.

· The crowd also heard powerful speeches from a group of students from Chicago—among them, Trevon Bosley (19), Alex King (18), D’Angelo McDade (18), and Mya Middleton (16)—about their experiences with gun violence in their communities.

· Naomi Wadler, an 11-year-old from Virginia, proudly declared “Never Again!” on behalf of black women and girls who have been the victims of gun violence. 17-year-old Edna Chavez, of south Los Angeles, lost her brother in a shooting and said she learned how to duck from bullets before learning how to read.

· Students from Newtown High School in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, presented a sign of solidarity to Stoneman Douglas High School.

· Stoneman Douglas High School students Sawyer Garrity and Andrea Pena performed “Shine,” a song they wrote after the shooting.

· Jennifer Hudson closed out the rally with a powerful performance of “The Times They Are A-Changin,” backed by a D.C. choir. As the student speakers joined her onstage, she led the audience in a “We Want Change” chant.

March For Our Lives had secured a permit for 500,000 people for Pennsylvania Avenue between 4th and 12th St NW. Law enforcement partners confirmed that the audience exceeded expectations with crowds extending well beyond 12th street and out further than Pennsylvania Avenue. The stage, located at 3rd and Constitution Streets, NW, served as the hub for the day’s rally. The entire rally was streamed live on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. More than 800 sibling marches took place in cities around the world.

‘LIFE OF THE PARTY’ WANTS TO BRING HOLLYWOOD TO ONE LUCKY COLLEGE TOWN IN AMERICA

The Student Who Shows the
Most School Spirit Can Help Bring the Star-Studded “Party” to Their University with

THE WORLD PREMIERE OF NEW LINE CINEMA’S COMEDY ‘LIFE OF THE PARTY’

March 8, 2018 – Students who participate in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and New Line Cinema’s LIFE OF THE PARTY Premiere Promotion can help bring the party-and the movie premiere-to their city simply by showing they have more school spirit than their peers at other colleges across the country.

Starting today, the Premiere Promotion will launch online at www.LifeofthePartyPremiere.com and via all WB social arenas. Just by posting a photo on a social media account depicting their school spirit and uploading it to the site, students will be eligible to make their school’s town the site of the LIFE OF THE PARTY World Premiere. Participants will also need to follow either the official “Life of the Party” Twitter or Instagram accounts (see links below) during the entirety of the Promotion to remain apprised of Promotion developments.

In the spirit of March’s usual madness, the initial phase of the Promotion begins today, March 8, 2018, and entries will be accepted through 11:59 PM PT on Wednesday, March 21, 2018. Phase two begins on Friday, March 23, when the Top 25 universities vying for the Premiere will be announced on the website. Then the Promotion heats up between them, with the last school standing announced on Friday, April 6.

Starring the eternally youthful Melissa McCarthy, LIFE OF THE PARTY tells the story of longtime dedicated housewife Deanna who, when her husband suddenly dumps her, turns regret into re-set by going back to college-alongside her daughter-and plunging headlong into the campus experience!

It’s possible that no one is quite as spirited as McCarthy’s Deanna, but real students can give it the old college try by entering the promotion beginning today, and continuing to share with all their friends on social media channels, proving just who has the most school spirit in the U.S. One lucky university will then be selected to host the movie’s star-studded, red carpet world premiere in their city in advance of the film’s release in theaters on May 11.

Watch the LIFE OF THE PARTY movie trailer here: https://youtu.be/T1B1CxmAXLk

LIFE OF THE PARTY is directed by Ben Falcone and stars McCarthy, alongside Gillian Jacobs (“Don’t Think Twice,” “Love,” “Community”), Maya Rudolph (“Bridesmaids,” “Sisters”), Julie Bowen (“Modern Family”), Matt Walsh (“Veep,” “Ghostbusters”), Molly Gordon (“Love the Coopers,” “Animal Kingdom”), with Stephen Root (“Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates”), and Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver (“Silver Linings Playbook,” “Animal Kingdom”), Jessie Ennis (“Better Call Saul”), Adria Arjona (“True Detective,” “Emerald City”), Debby Ryan (“Jessie”) and Jimmy O. Yang (“Silicon Valley”).

McCarthy and Falcone co-wrote the screenplay and produced through their production company, On the Day. Chris Henchy also produced the film, with Toby Emmerich, Richard Brener, Michael Disco and David Siegel serving as executive producers. New Line Cinema Presents an On the Day Production, “Life of the Party.” Slated for release on May 11, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. It has been rated PG-13.

NAS PAYS TRIBUTE TO BLACK MUSIC IN SPECIAL GOOGLE ARTS & CULTURE  VIDEO

To celebrate Black History Month, hip-hop legend, producer and entrepreneur Nas pays homage to a long tradition of Black musicians and storytellers who continue to empower us today in this compelling open letter and video.
Music has scored my life since day one.
Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 – WOW. That music really touched me. And the theme music to Marvel cartoons like the Amazing Spider Man and Iron Man – we used to sing those songs in kindergarten. Most kids have flashing memories of being served lullabies by their parents when they were shorties, and in this regard, I humbly fall, eyes closed, into that plush “most kids” box.
I was blessed to have love from both of my parents, and it just so happens that my father’s love for music took him around the globe via his own sonic excursions, both live and recorded. Pops would come back with mad loot (cash money, that is) from around the world. It was a testament to his globetrotting and a cool little nod to me that said, young blood, when you’re ready, the world is yours.

Growing up, Black history lessons in school were limited to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., George Washington Carver and Harriet Tubman. It wasn’t until I found my local public library-and with guidance from friendly librarians-that I began to understand the full breadth and depth of the impact of Africans in America. As a little Black girl growing up in white suburban Maryland, these lessons at the library, reinforced by conversations with my parents, were necessary to shaping a healthy identity as a Black woman.
As I studied my history, I learned that Harriet Tubman overcame her small stature and birth into slavery as, not only a brilliant conductor on the Underground Railroad, but a strategist who led the first military maneuver executed by an American woman. I learned that Jesse Owens overcame his childhood as a sickly sharecropper’s son to become an Olympic gold medalist. I learned that Black Americans in the South left what was familiar to migrate by the millions toward opportunity in the North, Midwest and West Coast. And I fell in love with the poems of Langston Hughes, who articulated the pain and the beauty of the Black experience in words that perfectly expressed what I had-until then-only felt.
