Cops and Robbers Clash on the Streets of Los Angeles

“Real men live by our own set of rules,” Coltrane Wilder (Y’lan Noel) intones in the opening moments of the Nemesis trailer. “Nah,” Isaiah Stiles (Matthew Law) responds, “real men know right from wrong.”
At its heart, that’s the central conflict of Nemesis, the new drama from Power creator Courtney A. Kemp and Tani Marole. Stiles and Wilder are adversaries on opposite sides of the law, but they’re also
reflections of each other: two men trying to provide for their families the only way they know how.
Nemesis is all about this delicate dance between Stiles and Wilder, right down to its title. “We definitely wanted to address the idea of a nemesis, someone who takes you down because of you,” Kemp told Netflix. “You make all the wrong decisions because of them, and you blow up your whole life by making bad choices.”
Adds Marole, “We’re used to the white shining knight and the black cat.
What if the black cat’s actually this great human being, and he just happens to do crime for a living? And what if the shining knight has some real anger issues, might need therapy, but he’s the hero?
They both have moral compasses. It’s just about which side of the coin they’re on.”
Wilder’s line of work is cracking safes and stealing jewels; Stiles’s job is catching men like Wilder.
“Isaiah has a despair and a hatred for something that is reflected within himself,” Law told Netflix. “These two men are trying to defeat the thing that they themselves embody. It’s a fascinating character study that Courtney and Tani have created.”
Wilder won’t make catching him easy. The “reformed” convict is now a respected entrepreneur, with a thriving business and a charitable streak that keeps the law off his back. “Wilder is always looking for a worthy opponent, and he finds that in Isaiah Stiles, unbeknownst to him,” Noel told Netflix. “They’re like soulmates, and they don’t even know it.”
Stiles’s superiors have no patience for his pursuit of Wilder. “Think of what you could cost him if you’re wrong,” police chief James Sealey (Michael Potts) tells his colleague.
“Think of how many more people will die if I’m right,” he responds.
And what about those already dead as a result of Wilder’s crimes? Stiles’s partner is one of those, making this a uniquely personal pursuit for the headstrong detective. Before things are over, the blast radius of their conflict will have grown to encompass both of their families. “Why can’t I get through to you, Isaiah?” Stiles’s wife Candace (Gabrielle Dennis) asks him in the trailer. “Where are you?”
Elsewhere, Wilder’s wife Ebony (Cleopatra Coleman) begs him to end his campaign. “One more big job,” he promises, “and we start the next chapter of our lives.”
That big job is six million dollars in untraceable diamonds — not exactly the type of haul Stiles can be persuaded to ignore. “I love cat-and-mouse chases,” Kemp teased. “They’re not easy to write because you really have to believe that both people have a shot.” These two certainly do.
“When two people meet, one yields to the other,” Wilder tells his lawful counterpart.
