ICYMI: VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS SITS DOWN WITH REV. AL SHARPTON FOR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW ON MSNBC’s POLITICSNATION

Interview Comes as NAN Continues Voter Outreach Effort in Key States to Activate Black Voters Ahead of Pivotal Election

NEW YORK, NY (October 21, 2024) – Vice President and Presidential nominee Kamala Harris sat down with Rev. Al Sharpton for an exclusive interview this Sunday, during a trip to activate voters in the key state of Georgia with two weeks left in the 2024 elections. Vice President Harris’ appearance on PoliticsNation, which has the highest concentration of Black viewers of any cable news program, focused on her opportunity agenda for Black men, what is at stake in the 2024 election, and the latest round of verbal attacks she has endured from Donald Trump.

The Vice President’s interview comes at a pivotal point in the 2024 elections. Rev. Sharpton and National Action Network (NAN) have led a non-partisan Get Out the Vote effort in battleground states such as Ohio and Pennsylvania. These trips have included members of the Central Park 5, the Black and Latino men wrongfully convicted and since exonerated, who were the target of Trump’s verbal attacks 35 years ago. Two of the members, Korey Wise and New York City Council Member Yusef Salaam, detailed the personal impact of Trump’s assaults, which included a full-page ad in the New York Times calling for their execution, as the former President attempts to court Black men to vote for him.

NAN’s Get Out the Vote campaign will continue this week when Rev. Sharpton travels to Detroit, a week after he visited Columbus, Ohio, with Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rep. Joyce Beatty. The trip will continue to activate Black voters about what is at stake in this election as well as what rights are further put at risk by staying home. More details on the Michigan trip will be announced later this week.

Such an effort has been supported by donations as part of the 2024 NAN Triumph Awards last month as well as a star-studded birthday celebration for Rev. Sharpton in Los Angeles on October 31st. The Southern California event will help propel NAN’s voter outreach effort in the final crucial days, while bringing together Earvin “Magic” and Cookie Johnson, Cedric the Entertainer, and Anthony Anderson. Rev. Sharpton will also honor Motown legend Smokey Robinson and veteran public relations strategist Ken Sunshine for their lifelong dedication to the Civil Rights Movement.

About National Action Network (NAN)
National Action Network is one of the leading civil rights organizations in the Nation with chapters throughout the entire United States. Founded in 1991 by Reverend Al Sharpton, NAN works within the spirit and tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to promote a modern civil rights agenda that includes the fight for one standard of justice, decency and equal opportunities for all people regardless of race, religion, nationality or gender.

Rebel Ridge

An ex-Marine grapples his way through a web of small-town corruption when an attempt to post bail for his cousin escalates into a violent standoff with the local police chief.

Synopsis

Terry Richmond brilliantly played by fledging star Aaron Pierre enters the town of Shelby Springs on a simple but urgent mission– post bail for his cousin and save him from imminent danger. But when Terry’s life’s savings is unjustly seized by law-enforcement, he’s forced to go head to head with local police chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson) and his combat-ready officers.

Terry finds an unlikely ally in court clerk Summer McBride (AnnaSophia Robb) and the two become ensnared in a deep-rooted conspiracy within the remote township. As the stakes turn deadly, Terry must call upon his mysterious background to break the department’s hold on the community, bring justice to his own family– and protect Summer in the process.

From the acclaimed writer/director of Green Room, Blue Ruin and Hold The Dark, Rebel Ridge is a deeply human yet high-velocity thriller that explores corruption and morality in the context of bone-breaking action and ever-coiling suspense. Produced by Anish Savjani, Neil Kopp, Vincent Savino and Jeremy Saulnier, Rebel Ridge also stars David Denman, Emory Cohen, Steve Zissis, Zsané Jhé, Dana Lee and James Cromwell.

Is Rebel Ridge based on a true story?

No, but you’d be forgiven for thinking it might be. “This film is not based on a particular incident, but elements of it could certainly happen,” Saulnier said. “I’m interested in examining corrupt systems — not so much how they’re built, but how they persist.” The specifics of Terry’s journey in Rebel Ridge — legal challenges, police harassment — won’t be strictly familiar to every viewer, but his push against the boundaries of Shelby Springs’ bureaucracy will ring true to anyone who’s been stuck on the line with their phone company for hours.

“For this movie, I wanted to tap into how the rest of us react to said [corrupt] systems,” Saulnier said, “from corrupt politicians down to the endless loop of a customer service call gone wrong.”

Everything You Need to Know About Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F Axel Foley is heading back to 90210 for an all-new adventure.

By John DiLillo
June 21, 2024

Cue the synthesizers — Eddie Murphy is back as Axel Foley. It’s been nearly 30 years since we last saw the fast-talking Detroit cop, but he’s finally heading out on a new case. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F sees Axel on patrol back in Beverly Hills, with friends both old and new — and maybe even a family member. As producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Top Gun: Maverick, The Rock) tells Tudum, “Eddie’s such an incredible artist. He can do drama, he can do comedy – he can do anything. And he’s the same Axel Foley. He’s still on the streets. He’s still doing what he does. Obviously with age you get wiser. But he still has the twinkle in his eye.” In other words: Axel’s only grown more potent in the last few decades. And so has Murphy. Director Mark Molloy tells Tudum: “Some of the funniest moments in Axel F are when Eddie’s improvising. For me, a big part of my job was to create the right environment, cast the right people around Eddie to allow him to do what he does best.”

We wouldn’t have it any other way. Check out the teaser above, and read on to find out more about the new action comedy. Wait, is that a banana in our tailpipe? One second.

What is Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F about?

Detective Axel Foley (Murphy) is back on the beat in Beverly Hills. After his daughter Jane’s (Taylour Paige) life is threatened, she and Foley team up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.
Axel’s been back to Beverly Hills a few times since his first jaunt in 1984, but it’s changed just as much as he has. “Detroit is a much different city than Los Angeles and especially Beverly Hills,” Bruckheimer says. “He still has the same kind of wonderment at the things you see walking down Rodeo Drive.”

As Molloy tells is: “As we were scouting going from Detroit to Beverly Hills, the cultural contrast that made Axel a fish out of water in the eighties still is so vivid. They might just be the two most opposite places in America.”

Who’s in the cast of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F?

The new film has its share of fresh and returning cast members, including:
• Eddie Murphy (Coming to America, Dolemite Is My Name, You People)
• Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper, The Trial of the Chicago 7)
• Taylour Paige (Zola, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom)
• Judge Reinhold (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Gremlins)
• John Ashton (Some Kind of Wonderful, Midnight Run)
• Paul Reiser (Aliens, Stranger Things)
• Bronson Pinchot (Perfect Strangers, Risky Business)
• Kevin Bacon (Leave the World Behind, Footloose)

Murphy is back as titular Axel Foley, while Reinhold and Ashton return as his Beverly Hills Police Department colleagues Billy Rosewood and John Taggart. Back in Detroit, Reiser reprises his role as Jeffrey Friedman — and of course, it wouldn’t be Beverly Hills Cop without an appearance from Pinchot’s Serge.
As for new partners, Paige plays Axel’s daughter Jane. “You’re trying to cast Axel Foley’s daughter. That’s a real challenge,” Molloy says. “I saw that same glint in Taylour’s eye, that infectious spark and energy that Axel has, but also someone who could go toe to toe with Axel, which is a hard thing.”
A few new faces are also joining the BHPD: Gordon-Levitt plays Detective Abbott and Kevin Bacon plays Captain Cade Grant. We’re sure Axel won’t rub any of them the wrong way.

What’s the release date for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F?
The new Beverly Hills Cop hits Netflix on July 3, almost a full 40 years after the original hit theaters. “I remember as a kid in Australia, watching it for the first time,” Molloy says. “I had an Axel Foley poster up on my bedroom wall just like everyone else, even in Australia.”
Speaking of which: While you wait for Axel Foley to arrive, why not refresh your memory of the Oscar-nominated classic? It’s streaming now on Netflix.

Happy Juneteenth!

On this day in 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Texas and formally announced the last enslaved people of their freedom, two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

One hundred and fifty-nine years ago, newly freed slaves didn’t know what awaited them outside of slavery, but they knew they now had the opportunity to pursue a better life for themselves, their families and loved ones, and the next generation.

Today, we move forward with that same hope our ancestors had as we continue our fight for a more perfect union, but we also acknowledge the work still ahead of us, and the barriers that remain — many of which our ancestors faced, too.

Systemic racism and white supremacy remain all too prevalent in our society and institutions. There is more we can — and must — do to protect the right to vote and counter the voter suppression laws that all too often target Black communities. We must keep fighting to expand access to affordable health care, to bring down costs, and to defend our hard-won freedoms from those working to dismantle them.

Our work continues, Lamar, and I’m grateful to have you with us.

Thank you, and happy Juneteenth.
