‘The Price of Free’ Will Debut on YouTube November 27th

Los Angeles, CA – YouTube announced its acquisition of the award-winning documentary The Price of Free (formerly titled Kailash ), a suspenseful yet intimate look at one man’s groundbreaking struggle to liberate every child possible. From rising director Derek Doneen and producer Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”, “He Named Me Malala”), the film follows Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi and his team of leaders around the world through gripping secret raids and quests for missing children. Co-produced and co-financed by Participant Media and Concordia Studio, t he 90-minute YouTube Original feature length documentary will debut on YouTube channel SoulPancake – Participant’s award-winning digital division – on November 27th, timed to coincide with #GivingTuesday . The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the U.S. Documentary Grand Jury Prize.
As a young man, Kailash Satyarthi promised himself that he would end child slavery in his lifetime. He left a lucrative career as an electrical engineer and started Bachpan Bachao Andolan (Save the Childhood Movement) to rescue children from the shackles of slavery. In the decades since, he has rescued more than 87,000 children and built a global movement including one of the largest civil society movements, the Global March Against Child Labor that demanded an international law on the worst forms of child labor, and the 100 Million Campaign, a youth-driven call to action ensuring every child in the world is free, safe and educated. A gripping story from start to finish, the film focuses on the spirited children who, released from a nightmare, latch onto a second chance for joy with all they’ve got. The Price of Free seeks to raise awareness on child labor and through the mission of Kailash and his team, build a better future for every child, everywhere.

In combination with its award-winning content, Participant Media invests in social impact campaigns that raise awareness about global challenges and inspire positive change. The Price of Free presents an opportunity to amplify the voice of Kailash Satyarthi, a tireless global activist, and to accelerate the reach and impact of his efforts to end child labor. Working with partners YouTube, Participant, Concordia, the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation, SoulPancake and the 100 Million Campaign’s Global Day of Action on Nov 14th will empower students, policymakers and business leaders to take action toward a future that is exploitation free. The campaign will provide audiences across the U.S. and worldwide with an opportunity to understand and reflect on why millions of children are trapped in child labor and will provide pathways for those audiences to invest, advocate and lead change in their community and around the world.

“This film shows the real scourge of child trafficking, child labor, slavery and exploitation that is ruining the childhood of millions and ruthlessly crushing their dreams,” says Kailash Satyarthi. “It shares stories of the most marginalized and vulnerable children that I have been fighting for all my life and will continue to. I call on everyone to watch this film and work with us in creating a world where all children are free, healthy, safe and educated – a world where every child is free to be a child. For, if any child is not free then none of us are free.” “We are incredibly inspired by the heroic work Kailash Satyarthi and his team do everyday,” said Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Original Content, YouTube. “One of YouTube’s missions is to give everyone a voice – and so we are proud to feature such an important and educational documentary that not only gives these young children a voice, but supports Kailash’s mission in giving them the childhood they rightly deserve.”

“At Participant, we tell stories of courageous leaders who stand up and drive change on behalf of those whose voices are not always heard,” said David Linde, CEO of Participant Media. “We are thrilled to partner with YouTube to amplify these efforts globally by sharing the tremendous story of Kailash Satyarthi who continues to work tirelessly to ensure all children are free, safe and educated.”
“Over the last two years, I’ve followed Kailash on undercover raid and rescue operations to free missing children and reunite them with their families,” said director Derek Doneen. “His tireless work and the hope that these kids displayed as they re-discovered their childhood continues to inspire my daily life. I couldn’t be more excited to partner with YouTube so that we can share
this incredible story with audiences around the world. I hope people will join Kailash in his movement to end child labor everywhere.”
Davis Guggenheim, Founder of Concordia Studio, commented: “Having known and worked with Derek since 2010, I couldn’t be more proud of him. He has managed to create both an action film with high stakes and a tender story of hope that might just change the world. To share this film with the world with YouTube is beyond our wildest dreams.”

The film is directed by Doneen and produced by Guggenheim and Sarah Anthony and co-produced by Purnima Raghunath. Executive Producers included Jeff Skoll, Diane Weyermann, Elise Pearlstein, Laurene Powell Jobs, Shannon Dill and Jonathan Silberberg.
The deal was negotiated by Gabriel Brakin, Participant Media’s General Counsel & EVP of Business Affairs, and Krista Wegener, Participant’s SVP of Sales & Distribution, as well as Submarine Entertainment’s Josh Braun.

SAY HER NAME: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF SANDRA BLAND

EXPLORING THE CONTROVERSIAL DEATH OF A
YOUNG BLACK WOMAN IN POLICE CUSTODY,
DEBUTS DEC. 3 ON HBO

On July 10, 2015, Sandra Bland, a politically engaged and vibrant 28-year-old African American from Chicago, was arrested for a traffic violation in a small Texas town. After three days in custody, she was found hanging from a noose in her jail cell. Bland’s death was quickly ruled a suicide, sparking allegations of a racially motivated police murder and cover-up, and turning her case and name into a rallying cry nationwide.
From the Oscar®-nominated, Emmy®- and Peabody Award-winning team of directors/producers Kate Davis and David Heilbroner (HBO’s “Traffic Stop,” “Southern Comfort,” “The Cheshire Murders” and “Jockey”), SAY HER NAME: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF SANDRA BLAND examines this story in depth, revealing previously unknown details when itdebuts MONDAY, DEC. 3 (10:00-11:45 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.
The documentary will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and partners’ streaming platforms.
Both a legal thriller and a parable about race in America, SAY HER NAME: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF SANDRA BLAND follows the Bland family and legal team from the first weeks after her death as they try to find out of what really happened in that jail cell in Hempstead, Texas. Embedded with the family and their lawyers, the filmmakers tracked the story for two years, drawing on key documents, jail footage and interviews with those closest to the events.
While the Texas authorities ruled Bland’s death a suicide, providing photos of a noose made out of a garbage-can liner as evidence of the cause of death, questions were raised about why she was held alone in a cell without surveillance cameras, whether cell checks by law enforcement had been fabricated and why Bland’s body had been severely bruised. Attorneys in the film examine the disturbing police dashcam video of Trooper Brian Encina’s aggressive treatment of Bland after pulling her over for failing to use a turn signal. Fearing that she had been murdered, her mother and sisters filed a suit against local law enforcement and the Waller County jail as protests amplified across the country.
SAY HER NAME is punctuated with footage from Bland’s passionate “Sandy Speaks” video blogs that bring her voice to life. Through the videos,as well as voicemail messages and insights from close friends, she emerges a central figure in the narrative, an engaging and enlightened woman whose sharp, humorous remarks address subjects from black history to police brutality to natural hair. To those who knew Sandra Bland best, suicide seemed unimaginable.
Following a contentious legal battle, the family settled with authorities, giving rise to the Sandra Bland Act, which is now law in Texas. The Act mandates a host of prison reforms aimed at preventing inmate suicide, and a street in Hempstead, Texas has been named in Sandra Bland’s honor.
Interviewees in the film include: Geneva Reed-Veal, her mother; sisters Shante Needham, Shavon Bland and Sharon Cooper; Sheriff Glenn Smith, head of the Waller County PD; Elton Mathis, DA, Hempstead, Texas; Trey Duhon, county judge, Hempstead, Texas; Hannah Bonner, activist and Waller County minister; and family attorney Cannon Lambert.
SAY HER NAME will have a limited theatrical run prior to its HBO debut.
The documentary made its world premiere at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival. It won Best of Fest at the Ridgefield Film Festival, and was nominated for awards at the Traverse City Film Festival, Chicago Film Festival, the St. Louis Film Festival and Nashville Film Festival, among many others.
SAY HER NAME: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF SANDRA BLAND was directed by Kate Davis; produced by David Heilbroner and Nancy Knox Talcott; edited by Kate Davis; directors of photography, Kate Davis and Tom Bergmann; music by Joel Harrison. For HBO: executive producer, Lisa Heller.

(LOS ANGELES) – November 9, 2018 – Film and television producer Datari Turner continues a year of successful ventures with the Showtime documentary Shut Up & Dribble, which he serves as executive producer on along with Lebron James’ SpringHill Entertainment. The three-part series premiered November 3 and will air its second installment this Saturday, November 10 at 9pm ET/PT.

Shut Up & Dribble, which borrowed its title from conservative commentator Laura Ingraham’s remarks to James earlier this year, provides a powerful inside look at the changing role of athletes in our fraught cultural and political environment, through the lens of the NBA. The series chronicles the modern history of the league, and how it became an incubator for many of its top athletes to grow their brands beyond the court and become cultural icons. By taking control of their own destinies, basketball players have helped to bring about social change and make their own statements in the current political climate. Former ESPN personality Jemele Hill narrates.

“I’m honored to be a part of such an inspiring and groundbreaking series,” says Turner. “Sports and basketball, in particular, have helped to bring about incredible social and economic change in our culture. Sports icons like Lebron James and others, continue to lead by example, making powerful statements for change in our current political climate.
